On behalf of the European Society for Microcirculation (ESM), the Local Organizing Committee and Program Committee, we wish you a warm welcome to the Biennial Meeting of the European Society for Microcirculation (ESM 2025), to be held in Szeged, Hungary between May 19-22, 2025. The venue of the meeting will be the József Attila Study and Information Centre of the University of Szeged.
The conference is a regular international meeting of the ESM scientific society, which has been held more than 30 times since 1959 in various European cities. On this occasion, the Hungarian Society for Microcirculation and Vascular Biology (MMVBT) is proud to host ESM 2025! In addition, the organization of the conference will be shared with the Hungarian, Croatian and Slovenian Physiological Societies to showcase research in microvascular physiology in the region.
The ESM and MMVBT aim to create a common platform for clinical and basic research focusing on the microcirculation of organs and tissues. From a medical perspective, the conference theme is of central importance, as microvascular pathologies contribute significantly to many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and central nervous system disorders. The program will begin with a thematic training session, followed by six plenary lectures, 14 symposia and two poster sessions, and will conclude with presentations by the winners of the 2025 Malphigi Award (ESM’s main prize) and the Journal of Vascular Research Publication Award. The ESM 2025 conference will provide an excellent opportunity for new international collaborations and active integration into the international vascular research community. ESM 2025 is an event that provides a platform for innovation in international partnership, especially for the development of therapeutic procedures and technologies that can be used in medicine.
ESM 2025 will take place in Szeged, a vibrant university town on the south-eastern border of Hungary, spreading out on both banks of the river Tisza. Szeged hosts four education and research institutions including the University of Szeged, the Biological Research Centre – Centre of Excellence of the European Union, the ELI-ALPS Szeged Laser Research Institute, and the HCEMM – Hungarian Center of Excellence for Molecular Medicine. The high standard of education and research at the University of Szeged is underlined by its Nobel Prize winning professors Albert Szent-Györgyi and Katalin Karikó. Thousands of academic employees and more than 20,000 university students from all over the world contribute to a lively intellectual environment in the city.
Although an old historical town, Szeged was destroyed by the flood of 1879 and has been rebuilt in the late 19th century almost entirely. The intense reconstruction delivered Neoclassical, Eclecticist and Art Nouveau architecture, and Szeged has become a Hungarian center of Art Nouveau. For nature lovers, Szeged is popular for bird watching, as the reconstruction of former fishponds outside the city resulted in a large and bird-rich wetland. Szeged is also famous for its delicious fresh water fish soup known beyond the borders.
