A D3-vitaminból a szervezetben kialakuló aktív D-vitamin a legősibb hormon az élőszervezetekben. Hatása szerteágazó, szinte minden szervrendszerben kimutatható. Napjainkban a D-vitamin-hiány az egyik leggyakoribb hiánybetegség a civilizált világban, melynek jelentőségéről pontos ismereteink nincsenek, de riasztó kép kezd összeállni.
Az emberi szervezetnek kb. napi 4000 nemzetközi egység (NE) D3-vitaminra van szüksége. Az átlagos hazai étrend ugyanakkor mindössze kb. 100 NE-t biztosit. A többi a bőrben a nap ultraibolya B sugárzásának hatására alakul ki, majd a májban és a vesében aktiválódik valóban biológiailag aktív hatóanyaggá (ezért is nevezzük D-hormonnak). A szükséges D-vitamin szint eléréséhez a áprilistól októberig, a nappali órákban elegendő 15 percet a napon tartózkodni. Sajnos, Magyarországon a novembertől márciusig tartó időszakban a napsugárzás már nem megfelelő a D-vitamin szintézishez. Ezért hazánkban a D-vitamin-hiány extrém gyakoriságú a tél végére, de még nyáron is 50% körüli lehet.
Régóta ismert, hogy D-vitamin-hiányban gyorsul a csontvesztés, romlik a csontok minősége. Emellett számos adat bizonyítja, hogy izomgyengeséghez, az autoimmun betegségek gyakoriságának, a fertőzések kockázatának növekedéséhez vezet. Előnytelenül hat a vérnyomásra, az érelmeszesedésre és sok más tünet mellett fokozza a vastagbél és az emlő rák kockázatát is.
A D-vitamin-hiány elleni küzdelem több magyarországi orvos társaság közös célja. A D-vitamin-hiány kezelése, illetve annak megelőzése közös fellépést sürgetett. Ezért született meg egy közös ajánlás, ami orvos szakmai állásfoglalás mellett szeretné ráirányítani a nem szakmai közönség és a döntéshozók figyelmét is a kérdés fontosságára.
