A HOD konferencia hátterében az a gyógyításban világszerte megnyilvánuló tendencia áll, amely az egyes betegségek szeparált kezelése helyett a beteget helyezi a középpontba. Ez a felfogás a szakterületek összefogását hangsúlyozza, arra ösztönöz, hogy az orvosok interdiszciplinárisan szemléljék feladatukat.
