By expecting the suggestion of Professor Zoltán Zsebők, President of Hungarian Society of Radiologists The Pediatric Radiology Section of the Hungarian Society of Radiologists was founded by dr. Erzsébet Sclaffer in 1977. The society is working as an independent organisation by the formal leading of the Hungarian Society of Radiologists.

Aims of the Section

The board has been organizing different kind of trainings, courses, conferences for pediatric radiologists, general radiologist, pediatritians with the same enthusiasm ever since.

Pediatric radiologist subspecialist exam

The year of 2004 was a big change in the life of our organization as after the efforts of decades the ministry of health accepted our request and the pediatric radiology became a subspeciality exam. There are two ways of approaching the subspeciality: pediatrician and radiologist can apply for the exam after completion of the training program. Radiologist need 2 years of further training and pediatricians 2.5 years. Currently, there are more than 20 specialists around and many others are in the training program.

Courses

Symposiums are organized every other year to secure the continous high quality education. At the same time these events provide opportunity for our community for talks, for showing new results and introduce interesting cases. At the meetings we always have internationally well known experts to give lectures.

Our division is always present at the yearly organised ultrasound days in Sopron and at the meetings for the rememberence of Imre Lélek held every second year in Héviz. In Sopron, there is always a special section for the Pediatric Radiology in order to give an update on the novelties.

Twice every year, in spring and in the fall the 1st Department of Pediatrics organizes the meeting called „Cases in Pediatric Radiology” to give an opportunity for the young doctors for presentations. The increase of the number of participants shows the popularity of the event: there were around 40-60 participants at the beginnings and it has been growning continously. Nowadays, this number exceeds 100 in some cases.

Every year we held a two-day-long course, which used to be in Miskolc but lately has moved to Budapest to the 1st Department of Pediatrics, and this course is a prerequisite for the subspeciality exam.

Publications

Pediatric radiologists publish every year more articles in the Journal of Hungarian Radiology. The book „Cases in Pediatric Radiology” edited by Dr Éva Kis was published in 2004 by the Semmelweis Kiadó (authors: Katalin Bitvai, Béla, Lombay, Éva Kis, Ildikó Várkonyi, Tibor Verebély). In 2010, the textbook „The Basics of Pediatric Radiology” was published by the same publisher and editor ( authors: Péter Barsi, Katalin Bártfai, György Balázs, Tamás Györke, Erzsébet Horváth, Éva Kis, Gábor Rudas, Ildikó Várkonyi). In 2013 a textbook "Radiopathology" was published by the Miskolc University for radiographers (edited:Béla Lombay, authors: Zoltán Harkányi, Béla Lombay, János Martos). "Pediatric traumatology" (Béla Lombay, Medicina Könyvkiadó, 1987) also helps the canditates to prepare for the subspeciality exam.

International presence of the subdivision

The board of the subdivision is constinous participant of the meetings of the European Society of the Pediatric Radiology (ESPR) held in different location every year. The board members give presentations, chairs at these meetings.

Bela Lombay was the president of ESPR and organized in Budapest the annual meeting of the Society of European Pediatric Radiology in 1992. Béla Lombay is the Honorary Member of ESPR (1997).
