The continuous development of the breast diagnostics and screening made it necessary to join together the Hungarian breast radiologists in a Section which deals with the problems of this subspecialty. It was founded in 1998. In 2004 it affiliates 256 members (21% of the Hungarian radiologists). The board consists of 9 members, the election is four-annual.
In the past 6 years the Section was very successful: at the first step we surveyed the professional and technical situation of the breast diagnostics in. Thereafter we made contacts among Hungarian and international breast organisations and professionals.
Main steps of our work:
At the beginning a review about the instrumental background and radiological knowledge in the field of Hungarian breast diagnostics.
Creation of the list of minimal requirements of screening and diagnostic examinations and the breast ultrasound.
Revision of the breast diagnostic codes was performed, with suggestion of a uniform coding system.
Preparation for the Hungarian Breast Screening Program with the help of screening expert Z Pentek National Screening initiated at December 2001 with coverage of the whole country
Creation of the 1st version of the National Screening Protocol, including QC details.
Edition of 2nd version of the National Screening Protocol is on the way
Application for acceptance of breast vacuum core biopsy examination – on the way
Other important issue is the training and refreshing, with the intention of accomplishing a uniform breast diagnostic knowledge. High number of refresher courses was organized by our Section, several times together with other disciplines. Our session’s members and leaders are regular educators of different meetings, as: National Congress of Radiology, Hungarian Congress of Oncology, Hungarian Society of Senology courses, Lelek Imre, St Agathe meeting etc.
High level educations are regularly organized by Szeged University and in the framework of the yearly French-Hungarian Radiology Symposium.
Secretary General of our Section (G Forrai) has been elected as member of the Breast Subcommittee of the European Congress of Radiology, for 4 years, with presentation of refresher courses.
We have organized educational meetings where Professors L Tabar and T Tot (Sweden) have presented a course in 1999 and 2004 for the screening centers. Experts from Nijmegen, Netherlands, (Prof. R Holland), France (J. Chopier, M.H.Dilhuydy), Nottingham UK, (Prof. Wilson, Ellis), B Bone (Sweden) and many others have shared their knowledge with us in the recent years. Our Section’s annual meeting is held with above 100 participants every year, always joined to a scientific program and case discussions. We continuously deal with the medico-legal problems’ question. Leaders of our Section have participated as writers in educational books written about the actual questions of breast cancer, ultrasonography and breast screening.
After the success of the first screening round the 3rd year is actually performed, after the evaluation and modification of the project.
The main goal of the Hungarian breast diagnostics is to achieve full EU compatibility.
