| Clinical training in another country | Young neurologists need good clinical training. Not all centers have the facilities to train young neurologists adequately in their area of interest, so the trainee may have to spend time in another country. One of the YNT's priorities is to help interested trainees to find a specialised training center in their subspeciality. The YNT also aims to provide funding for training abroad. It is important that such training is recognised in the trainee's home country, which will depend on quality assurance and people not just having a cheap holiday. Therefore any training abroad should be approved in advance to ensure it is worthwhile. The YNT will provide information about clinical training programmes and host centers on this website, to help trainess to select where to spend their precious time. OFTEN: The European Board of Neurology of the UEMS (Union of European Medical Specialists) has just established a programme to assist neurology training abroad, called OFTEN (Open Facilities for Training in European Neurology). Its website www.uems.org/neuro lists 81 neurology departments in 14 countries which are willing in principle to accept neurology trainees from any country in Europe for 3-12 months, and can provide high quality training. OFTEN will give information to help trainees to arrange this, but does not provide any funding. Applications should be directly to the host department. A selection of these departments are listed below.
http://www.ynt-europe.com/clinical.html | | | | | CNF Researcher-in-Training Award | One of the important parts of the mission of the Child Neurology Foundation is to encourage innovative research by pediatric neurologists, especially those who are early in their careers and who have not yet achieved NIH support.
The Researcher-in-Training Award is intended for child neurology residents who are in their last year of ACGME-approved residency training and who wish to pursue a research career in clinical child neurology. The purpose of the grant is to fund an additional year of child neurology training dedicated primarily to research. The award provides up to $75,000 for salary and fringe benefits plus partial research support. Transition from completion of residency to independence as a scientist has been identified as one of the major hurdles facing clinician-scientists, even those with advanced scientific education such as an M.D./PhD degree.

| | | | | Department to Department Cooperation Programme | On the initiative of the European Cooperation Committee, the EFNS launched the project "Department to Department Cooperation" in 2001. Since then, the participants have highly appreciated these training activities. A quite positive evaluation has also been expressed by the heads of the hosting departments. The project has allowed a number of East European Neurologists to visit Western departments, the statistics being: year 2002, 21; 2002, 27; 2003, 40; 2004: 66; 2005:66; 2006:66.

Therefore, the EFNS Management Committee has decided to prolong this programme, to increase the grants to 1500 € plus travel expenses up to € 300 (Note: € 300.- will only be paid after receipt of your final report), and to honour 66 applicants each year. The purpose of this award is to support the accommodation and board expenses in the city of his/her practice. The higher grant is supposed to allow for a visit of a duration up to six weeks. If a participant is able to accept a low budget board, e.g., a canteen and an accommodation in a college provided by the hosting institute, or perhaps be spending some of his/her own money, it may be possible to stay longer than six weeks in the hosting department.
Eligible are candidates from all European countries. Applicants must be under the age of 40, fluent in English or in the local language. Awardees from previous years are no more qualified. As the EFNS office could not provide a sufficient number of hosting department, we ask the candidates to arrange their visits in a department of their choice individually.
